In Veil The folded book brings attention to a sobering reality where millions of women are oppressed through radical religious beliefs and laws. In the vast majority of Islamic states, one of the more pressing issues is the gender-based discrimination against women. Women do not even come close to equal access to the same rights as their male counterparts; many are treated as second-class citizens. They are no opportunities in terms of education or political activism. For this project, I created a mask representative of traditional Muslim headdress and went to various public places asking people to participate in my campaign. After talking about this sad but very true reality, I asked them to look at the world through these women’s eyes and through the mask. The Polaroid camera allowed participants to get involved with my campaign directly, instantly being able to hold a physical representation of the issue.
